DAY 8 - Sossusvlei's Sand Dunes

We rise early this morning for a magical excursion excursion to Sossusvlei, exploring some of the world's highest sand dunes, standing some 300m high.

Dead Vlei is an ancient clay pan that was once an oasis, studded with acacias and fed by a river. When the river suddenly changed course, the land and vegetation there dried up. So dry were the climatic conditions that the trees never decomposed – instead they were entirely leached of moisture. Today, 900 years later, they remain as desiccated, blackened sentinels dotting the pan’s cracked surface. Surrounded by the red-pink dunes of the Namibia Desert, they create a surreal spectacle that is a wildlife spotter's dream. We return to camp in the late morning as the desert temperature soars.

In the late afternoon, visit the 18-million-year-old Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water and best explored on foot. Rock walls rise up sharply, while birds roost in the crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem' – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.

We'll travel via Solitaire to the Spreetshoogte Pass, reaching Barkhan Dune Retreat, an intimate lodge nestled in an idyllic valley, for the last night and enjoy dinner together.
